12108 B GLYPHOSATE ( ADAMA,ALBAGH,DREXEL,MONS ) AVOCADO ( 24B = TROPICAL AND SUBTROPICAL, MEDIUM TO LARGE FRUIT, SMOOTH, INEDIBLE PEEL SUBGROUP ) NOT A TOLERANCE ACTION, REQUIRES LABEL CHANGE

Reduced Risk Status: THIS AI HAS BEEN CLASSIFIED AS RR FOR ONE OR MORE FOOD USES.
IPM Compatibility: PER WSR 2017 NOMINATION COMMENT: VERY GOOD IPM FIT; WEEDS CAN COMPETE WITH AVOCADO TREES AND CAN HARBOR PESTS THAT ATTACK FRUIT OR TREES. IN AVOCADO, MUCH OF THE WEED CONTROL IS FOCUSED ON REDUCING VEGETATION FROM FIELD MARGINS AND REDUCING WEEDS THAT COMPETE WITH TREES FOR WATER AND NUTRIENTS. WEED CONTROL TAKES PLACE YEAR-ROUND, PARTICULARLY IN THE RAINY SEASON. MANY AVOCADO WEEDS SUCH AS BARNYARDGRASS (ECHINOCHLOA CRUS-GALLI), NUTSEDGES (CYPERUS SPP.), BERMUDAGRASS (CYNODON DACTYLON), DALLISGRASS (PASPALUM DILATATUM), AND FIELD BINDWEED (CONVOLVULUS ARVENSIS) REQUIRE HERBICIDE APPLICATIONS ALONG WITH OTHER MANAGEMENT TECHNIQUES TO GET COMPLETE CONTROL. OF THE HERBICIDES REGISTERED FOR USE IN BEARING AVOCADO TREES, GLYPHOSATE PROVIDES CONTROL OF MOST OF WEEDS FOUND IN AVOCADO (SEE UC IPM AVOCADO PEST MANAGEMENT GUIDELINE, P. 99) WHILE OTHER HERBICIDES PROVIDE LESS CONTROL OR HAVE OTHER CHALLENGES. FOR EXAMPLE, THE MAIN POST HERBICIDE ALTERNATIVE, PARAQUAT IS NOT AS EFFECTIVE AS GLYPHOSATE ON PERENNIAL WEEDS AND HAS REGULATORY CHALLENGES RELATED TO WORKER SAFETY. TWO OF THE THREE COMMONLY USED PRE HERBICIDES IN AVOCADO ARE SIMAZINE AND NORFLURAZON, BOTH OF WHICH ARE MORE HEAVILY REGULATED IN AREAS WHERE RUNOFF TO SURFACE WATERS OR LEACHING TO GROUNDWATER MAY OCCUR. REDUCING THE PHI IN AVOCADO TO BE SIMILAR TO OTHER CROPS THAT ARE REPEATEDLY CONTINUALLY HARVESTED OVER MULTIPLE MONTHS (SUCH AS LEMON) GIVES GROWERS MORE OPTIONS TO CONTROL WEEDS WHEN THEY ARE YOUNG AND BEFORE THEY ARE PROBLEMATIC
Reasons for need: CURRENTLY REGISTERED; NEED LABEL CHANGE TO REDUCE PHI FROM 14 TO 1 DAY
Requesting State(s): CA:Melban, K ;
PCR Use Pattern: USE THE TOUCHDOWN TOTAL PRODUCT; APPLY 5.8 QT/A, FOLIAR DIRECTLY ON WEEDS; 1-DAY PHI; SEE EXISTING LABEL FOR OTHER USE PATTERN INFO

Comments: CONSIDER IF THE PHI REDUCTION CAN BE SECURED WITHOUT RESIDUE DATA, BASED ON EXISTING 1-DAY PHI FOR TREE CROPS SUCH AS BANANA, CITRUS, GUAVA, PAPAYA, PLANTAIN AND POME FRUIT:01/17; CONSIDER IF THIS CAN BE DONE VIA A CHEMSAC PROPOSAL:10/17; IR-4 CHEMSAC PROPOSAL WILL BE SUBMITTED TO EPA, AND SUPPORT BY ALBAUGH WILL BE CONFIRMED:12/17; CHEMSAC PROPOSAL FOR PHI REDUCTION TO 1 DAY, BASED ON EXISTING RESIDUE DATA AND TOLERANCES WITH A SIMILAR USE PATTERN, WAS APPROVED BY EPA, AND THE CURRENT AVOCADO TOLERANCE OF 0.2 PPM IS ADEQUATE TO COVER THIS AMENDED USE; ALSO NO REVISED HUMAN HEALTH RISK ASSESSMENT IS NECESSARY; ALBAUGH SUPPORTS AMENDING ONE OF THEIR PRODUCT LABELS FOR SUBMISSION WHEN TIME PERMITS:01/18
